La Cueva de las Ventanas

La Cueva de las Ventanas

It is also called Cueva de la Ventanilla or Cueva de la Campana.

It is located in Spain, in the municipality of Píñar, in the province of Granada, near Casas Rurales Medina in Güevéjar, 25 minutes away. It is also called Cueva de la Ventanilla or Cueva de la Campana.

It is both a tourist cave and an archaeological site. It is located in the last foothill of Sierra Arana, at an altitude of about 1,000 meters. The temperature inside is around 13 degrees throughout the year.

Archaeological remains from different centuries have been found in the Cueva de las Ventanas, beginning with the Mousterian industry, associated primarily with the Neanderthals in the Middle Paleolithic. The remains of the Neolithic and of the historical period are more abundant.

Nowadays the cave is equipped for your visit, even for disabled people on a large part of the route. The visit starts in the town of Píñar where there is an organized transfer service to the cave, since it is not possible to reach the cave with private vehicles. The estimated visit time is one hour.

Near this cave is the Cueva de la Carihuela (or Carigela), another site that is of great importance to the studies of Neanderthals. It is not easily accessible by the public.
